GrEEn Project supports 2,000 youth with employable skills

Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Programme under Outcome II of the Promotion of Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities in Ghana (GrEEn) programme has trained and supported 2,000 youth, women and returning migrants to acquire skills.

Funded by the European Union and implemented by the Netherlands Development Agency (SNV), the programme aims to equip youth, returning migrants and women with appropriate skills to promote job creation and contribute to Ghana’s development.

This was disclosed by Mr. Laouali Sadda, the Project Manager of GrEEn, who said the beneficiaries were from Ashanti and Western regions where the project was implemented.

He spoke at the graduation and closing ceremony of the Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship (YEE) programme in Kumasi.

The YEE program, which is being implemented in partnership with Ghana’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) services, aims to introduce certification courses in six subject areas.

These include solar panel installation, bio-ring tank construction, cosmetology, garment manufacturing, pearl and soap making.

At the ceremony, 729 YEE service providers who passed the educational assessment were awarded the National Level I Qualification Certificate.

Sadda noted that collaborating with TVET services and achieving the National Level I Certification will enable recipients to have a clear pathway to academic progression within the national TVET qualifications framework.

It will also support understanding of past skills and promote proper work to improve the quality of life.

He said that the purpose of the approval and closing ceremony was to formally recognize the skills, knowledge, values or compliance with the skills needed for the selected trade area.

The Boosting Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities in Ghana (GrEEn) project was a four-year action by the European Union, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, SNV Netherlands Development Organization and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).

The project aimed to create greater economic and employment opportunities for youth, women and return migrants by promoting and supporting sustainable green businesses and providing employable skills training to young job seekers in the Ashanti and Western regions of Ghana.

It is implemented with municipal ministries, the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Rural Development.

Green was introduced in the EU Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF) in Africa with a total donation of EUR 2.6 million.
